Healthcare: has there been a more relevant topic of conversation over the past 15 months? In just over a year, we’ve seen a mysterious epidemic balloon into a pandemic that closed borders and claimed lives—swiftly followed by a league of scientists developing a number of viable vaccines in a much shorter timeframe than could have reasonably been anticipated. Those of us not deemed key workers kept to our own quarters, introducing the need for health services to be conducted almost entirely online.
Within weeks of the March 2020 lockdown, GP surgeries were attending to patients via email or video consultations. While this development was born of necessity, Dr Rosemary Leonard, MBE, believes it should be the way of the future. On Thursday, 3 June, she sat down with Samantha Simmonds, host of Sunday Politics, to discuss the rapid changes the healthcare industry has experienced under the influence of Covid-19. Dr Leonard voiced the opinion that GP surgeries being more dependent on digital has in fact made things more efficient. She also discussed the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) and genetics in the industry’s future, as well as the challenge doctors face in getting the public on board.
