Specialist View: An introduction...

 

Pizza Express or Pizza Hut? BMW, Audi or Mercedes? London, Paris or New York? Apple or Samsung? It doesn’t take too long to establish a preference; to identify those little things which, when put together, help us decide what we like, what we buy and which companies we do business with.   

It’s the same with financial services providers and products although sometimes, to be fair, making a choice can sometimes be tricky. Regulation and competition have made differentiation increasingly difficult; costs and fund ranges are largely similar and illustrations are produced in line with strict guidelines.

Deciding where to invest your client’s money isn’t always easy. The truth is, it’s about more than just product. Of course the product needs to meet the requirements of your client, that’s a given; but when it comes to the best overall solution, it’s also about the provider, the brand and the service. That means looking at factors such as turnaround times, customer experience, company ethics, the level of support you and your clients receive and so on.

We produce Specialist View to help make the right decisions for your clients; to enable you to solve their problems, create innovative and effective solutions and to help you stand out from the competition. We want you to see and know what we can offer, from our risk targeted portfolios to our Discretionary Fund Management and stockbroking services and our Specialist Range.

So, for starters, a few of the little things that we believe set us apart…

Our history

Sanlam was formed in South Africa 1918 by a small group of people who wanted to assist with the empowerment of those impoverished and marginalised by conflict in that country. The theme of empowering and helping those who need it the most is one which stands strong throughout our history and is very present today. From somewhat humble beginnings the group has grown considerably and is now valued in excess of £7 billion, employing over 15,000 individuals worldwide and managing in excess of £50 billion in client assets.

Telephone support

We recognise that there’s nothing more irritating than calling a company only to get lost in the maze of modern telephony. You might call us old fashioned, but that’s why we prefer the personal touch. Your first point of call is the Client Services team. If they can’t help you then they will introduce you to a product expert who can. No automated systems, just personal, easy to access, support.

Communications

We understand the importance of communication, which is one of the reasons we’re so active on social media. In fact independent surveys have rated us as one of the top providers when it comes to online presence and content. It doesn’t just stop there however. We also have an active email calendar that includes, amongst other things, a monthly technical update that helps support your personal development and also a weekly publication that you can use to assist in your client communications.

We’re also working to improve our customer communications too and we hope you’ll see big improvements in 2016 and really welcome your feedback.

Financial strength

When you’re recommending a provider to a client, you both need to be confident in its strength and that it’s a safe home for their money. Whilst we may not be thought of as one of the large providers in the UK, globally we have a very large footprint, looking after the financial wellbeing of over 10 million customers. We make sure we keep large cash reserves, both globally and in the UK so you and your clients can have peace of mind.

Perfect size

We think we’re lucky with our structure. With the support of our parent company we have the financial strength to compete, but due to our size in the UK we can operate more like a smaller company, so can adapt to change faster. It also means we have no big legacy issues to slow us down. What’s more, with a global group behind us we’re able to benefit from the substantial expertise and experience that deepen our knowledge and strengthen our offering.

Ethics
