From modest beginnings in 1918 as a small life insurance company, Sanlam has grown to be one of the largest financial services groups in South Africa. The group comprises a number of business entities focusing mainly, but not exclusively, on wealth management and protection, investment management and ancillary financial solutions.
They have expanded beyond their borders and now have business
interests elsewhere in Africa, India and Europe. Listed on
the JSE Securities Exchange, as well as the Namibian Stock
Exchange, the company grows from strength to strength with assets under
management of over £40billion with an AA National long term

Sanlam in the UK has developed through holdings in several companies
involved in financial services. Merchant Investors was purchased
in 2003, now known as Sanlam Investments and Pensions, specialising
in niche financial products. In 2008, Sanlam acquired a
majority stake in the financial planning firm Buckles which has
become Sanlam Private Wealth. Sanlam Fund Solutions was
established in 2008, as a specialist firm of discretionary investment
managers.
As well as these core companies, Sanlam UK also has an interest in the wrap provider, the Nucleus Financial Group

LUKAS VAN DER WALT
Executive Biography of the Chief Executive Officer of Sanlam UK
Born in South Africa, Lukas studied at the Rand Afrikaans University and UNISA where he graduated in Accounting in 1983. Lukas has worked for Billiton Aluminium in The Hague, where positions held included Head of Human Resources & Commercial Affairs and Divisional Finance Director. Lukas was Head of Corporate Finance for Sanlam Limited, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer for Sanlam International and Head of Business Development for Sanlam Limited. In March 2004 he took up the position of Chief Executive of Merchant Investors Assurance Company. In 2008 Lukas was appointed Chief Executive of Sanlam UK Limited to oversee the group’s growing portfolio of financial service businesses in the United Kingdom. Lukas lives in Bristol with his wife and two children.
